Midnight Basketball
Midnight Basketball is conducted on Friday evenings from 9pm to 12 Midnight at the Cairns Basketball Complex. On these Friday evenings young people are given the opportunity to engage in activities and games associated with Basketball. These activities take place in a supervised and safe - drug, alcohol and tobacco free environment.
The main goal of Midnight Basketball is to build youth assets and healthy lifestyle choices for young people through mentoring schemes, and providing a positive alternate outlet. The program gives youth an opportunity to spend the duration of their Friday evenings in a positive environment, where emphasis is placed on fun, friendship and fitness.
H.D.P Youth Mentors attend the Midnight Basketball Program to supervise and conduct basketball coaching clinics while role-modeling positive attitudes and behaviours. This gives those youth attending the opportunity to develop a strong rapport with the H.D.P Youth Mentors.
Various community-based services are also invited each week to distribute promotional material including advertisements for employment opportunities and materials that encourage Indigenous youth to lead healthy lifestyles. Many local celebrities and special guests have also attended Cairns Midnight Basketball.
Midnight Basketball is a free program for those who choose to attend and at the conclusion of each Midnight Basketball event; all participants are given free transportation to their desired destination
The Hoop Dreaming Project Midnight Basketball Program has been successfully implemented in Cairns, Mareeba, Innisfail, Yarrabah, Smithfield & Edmonton. Anecdotal data indicates that when Midnight Basketball is being conducted, crime rates decrease significantly. On average approximately 250 young people attend each session and on December 7, 2007 at the first ever Hoop Dreaming Midnight Basketball Tournament over 400 young people packed out the Bendigo Bank Basketball Facility.
