The first ever FNQ Super League All-star weekend will take place over the Australia Day weekend, January 23-25 at the Bendigo Bank Basketball Centre (Fish Tank), 289 Aumuller Street.
The event will see the premier basketball players from the FNQ Super league join together to play in City & Country representative All-star teams, which will compete against each other and other All-Star teams from Papua New Guinea and the Torres Strait.
The top ten combined players from the Bulldogs, Saints and Timberwolves basketball clubs have been selected to represent the CITY ALL-STARS team. The top ten combined players from the Atherton Harriers, Mulgrave Magic and Phoenix basketball clubs have been selected to represent the COUNTRY ALL-STARS team. These selections have been made based on a 3-2-1 points voting scale which takes place after each FNQ Super League game.
Also over the All-Star weekend a Slam Dunk Contest and 3-Point Shootout will be held.
FNQ Super League Commissioner Joel Khalu said the All-Star Weekend is shaping up to be a great event.
“It’s a great opportunity for the community to see high-level basketball,” Khalu said. “The top local players along with the best players from Papua New Guinea and the Torres Strait will all be in action showcasing their talents. It’s a great representation of the FNQ Super League and how far it has progressed in just over a year.”
Headlining the CITY All-Stars team are Cairns Taipans development players Kerry Williams & Dean Brebner. Also joining these two in the CITY starting line-up will be Cairns Marlins QABL player James Comino.
The COUNTRY All-Stars team will be led by former Taipans player Deba George and Cairns Marlins point guard Curt Ahwang. George and Ahwang are currently the top two leading point scorers in the FNQ Super League. Phoenix big man Rowan Gray adds size to the Country line-up which will also boast last season’s FNQ Super League Most Valuable Player, Charles Opio.
“It’s the first time in the history of Cairns Basketball we have had a full All-Star Weekend including games, a dunk competition and 3-point shootout,” Khalu noted. “It’s a positive event and what makes it better is that the majority of the All-Star players involved have all come through the Cairns Basketball Representative pathway program.”
